Outpatient Addiction Treatment for First Responders

What is a first responder? A first responder is a type of working professional who is continually among one of the first to arrive at or provide assistance in an emergency or crisis situation. For example, firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement officers, and emergency medical technicians are all considered first responders. With the unique experiences of individuals involved in these professions in mind, specialized addiction treatment for first responders is crucial. Outpatient LA provides specialized outpatient treatment for first responders designed to address the needs of the population.

Drug and Alcohol Addiction in First Responders

In addiction treatment, the context of your life matters. Common themes related to drug and alcohol addiction in first responders that may influence treatment needs include but are not limited to the following.

  • Reasons for using substances: First responders may use drugs and alcohol for specific reasons, such as to combat trouble sleeping caused by long and unpredictable work hours, stress, or poor mental health. Addressing the underlying causes of addiction in first responders is often vital for successful treatment, which is exactly what we aim to do at Outpatient LA.
  • Higher rates of substance abuse: First responders are more likely to abuse some substances compared to the general population. For example, while statistics can vary based on the distinct line of work you are in, the prevalence of alcohol abuse in first responders is said to be 16-40 percent.
  • Pressure at work: As a first responder, you likely face a particularly high amount of pressure at work, which can be stressful. Substance abuse and other mental health problems often worsen with stress, especially without satisfactory coping skills and self-care habits in place. We’ll help you create new patterns that make balancing work with self-care more possible.
  • Chronic exposure to traumatic events: Trauma and trauma disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are known risk factors for substance abuse. Unfortunately, first responders are often exposed to trauma on a repeated basis through their work, raising the risk of both trauma disorders like PTSD and substance use disorders.
  • Fear of stigma: In some cases, substance abuse may be normalized in your line of work, which can make it more challenging to get support for addiction. You may also face stigma in the sense that you are afraid of what would happen to your career if you were to seek help. Outpatient LA will keep your treatment 100% confidential, and we are here to help you navigate work-related issues if needed.

Outpatient LA is here to help you or your loved one find sustainable solutions for addiction recovery. Our center treats all types of substance abuse in first responders and others seeking help through our programs.

How Outpatient LA Helps First Responders Seeking Addiction Treatment

Since Outpatient LA is a fully outpatient treatment center, our programs are an excellent choice for those who need to work (or return to work) while in treatment. However, that’s not all we have to offer. We have a specialized treatment path for first responders, which means that you will have access to special services and forms of support, like a group designed for first responders, while in treatment at Outpatient LA.

While it can be hard to seek help for addiction, doing so could save your career–or even your life. The consequences of addiction are serious, and many people face job loss, absenteeism, and legal or financial consequences related to substance abuse, as well as new or worsening physical and mental health issues that can be life-threatening. These implications can occur at any point in time, and they can affect anyone misusing substances.

Below are some of the programs and services at Outpatient LA that can help individuals and families looking for outpatient addiction treatment for first responders. If you have any questions about our programs or how we can help, please call our admissions line.

The partial hospitalization program (PHP) at Outpatient LA provides intensive therapy for about five hours per day, five days per week. On treatment days, our PHP clients participate in a comprehensive combination of evidence-based and holistic treatments in groups and individual therapy sessions. For example:

  • Behavioral therapies for addiction and mental health, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).
  • Motivational therapies for addiction, such as motivational enhancement therapy (MET)
  • Medication management.
  • Family-focused groups.
  • Exposure therapy.
  • Psychoeducation.

PHP can be an ideal alternative to inpatient rehab for those who do not require full-time hospitalization, but it can also help you transition out of an inpatient rehab program if you attend one prior to entering care at Outpatient LA.

The intensive outpatient program (IOP) at Outpatient LA is one step down from PHP in intensity. Rather than attend treatment daily, IOP clients usually attend treatment a few days per week for a few hours per day. This provides more time for work and other responsibilities. Some clients at Outpatient LA are able to start with this level of care, but it is common to step down to IOP after completing PHP.

Outside of treatment hours, clients at Outpatient LA are free to live at home or stay in sober living. Sober living has many benefits for people in addiction recovery, such as an increased sense of accountability and community. The Outpatient LA team is happy to assist clients in securing sober living placements in the area. If you feel that you or your loved one in need of addiction treatment for first responders would benefit from sober living, we can help.

Not everyone who needs addiction treatment seeks help on their own. If you have a loved one who is in need of drug and alcohol rehab services and would like to learn more about how to stage an effective drug intervention, please give us a call. We are here to discuss treatment barriers with your loved one and work through them if needed.
