Understanding Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Women
Research shows that there are sex and gender differences in people’s experiences with substance use, treatment, and recovery. For example, women may be more prone to relapse and cravings. Here are some other notable differences.
- While women are just as likely to develop a substance use disorder as men are, women are more likely to seek treatment for the misuse of central nervous system (CNS) depressants. For example, medications used for insomnia or anxiety, like benzodiazepines.
- Women’s reasons for using some substances, such as stimulants, can sometimes be different. For example, more women report using methamphetamine for weight loss than men do. When this is the case, addressing underlying concerns, such as body image, is essential.
- Female drinkers and women with alcohol use disorder experience unique health risks, and their health may be more severely affected by alcohol use than men, even if they use less alcohol or use alcohol for a shorter length of time.
- Women and people assigned female at birth may experience pregnancy and fertility-related consequences of using drugs and alcohol. If she does become pregnant, a woman may be unable to take some medications, which could include prescriptions supporting her overall mental health and recovery.
- As a woman, drugs may affect your brain differently. For example, studies show that marijuana impacts spatial memory in women more than it does in men.
- Women may face (or might be more prone to) specific treatment barriers, such as lack of childcare or the fear of losing child custody.
Since trauma is a risk factor for substance abuse, it is imperative to note that women face some types of traumatic events at higher rates, such as sexual assault and stalking. Gender bias can affect mental health and your overall experiences as you move through the world, which can be a critical treatment consideration for women. Dual-diagnosis treatment can help women facing concerns such as trauma disorders and other co-occurring mental health conditions.
Our Women’s Drug Rehab Programs in Los Angeles
Our women’s drug rehab program operates on an outpatient basis. Women seeking gender-specific addiction and dual-diagnosis treatment at our facility may benefit from the following program schedules and services. We are here to help women like you or your loved one access effective substance abuse treatment that fits their unique needs.
There are many benefits to outpatient drug and alcohol rehab programs, but the main advantage for most women is the adaptability they provide. Checking into an inpatient rehab center can mean that you are not able to see your family regularly, but in outpatient treatment, you are able to do so whenever you want to outside of treatment hours.
Partial hospitalization, also called “partial day treatment,” offers the highest possible level of care in an outpatient environment. Clients in partial hospitalization programs attend treatment for groups and other services daily throughout the week. This intensive treatment schedule makes partial hospitalization programs an ideal fit for people seeking an alternative to inpatient rehab who do not require 24/7 supervision in a hospital environment. The partial hospitalization program (PHP) at Outpatient LA provides an immersive treatment experience.
Outpatient LA can help PHP clients arrange for time off of work or similar obligations (e.g., college classes). While it can be challenging to think about taking time off of work to attend a partial hospitalization program, this level of care can be a crucial starting point, and it is often short-term.
Intensive outpatient programs are one step down from PHP in terms of their intensity. Clients in the intensive outpatient program (IOP) at Outpatient LA have a lower time commitment, so they are able to participate in or return to work, school, or other responsibilities while continuing to attend treatment a few times throughout the week at our facility. IOP is very flexible. IOP can be used as a starting level of care, but many women in our women’s drug rehab program step down to IOP after PHP to ease the transition back into everyday life.
Since Outpatient LA is not an inpatient facility, we offer comfortable and sophisticated sober living accommodations for those in our programs who need or may benefit from them. For example, clients coming from out of state or those who want the extra accountability and structure they provide. Sober living can boost recovery outcomes and provide clients with a supportive, comfortable, and structured living space to support them as they overcome addiction. However, you are also welcome to live at home while you participate in treatment at our facility if you choose.
